R.I.P. Mike Brown

Mike Brown was a tattoo artist who, if you know your history, always comes up when people talk about those who pioneered tattooing in the late 1970s. He worked at China Sea (formerly owned by Sailor Jerry), ground zero for traditional American tattoos, and at the birthplace for black grey penitentiary-style tattoos, Good Time Charlie’s Tattoo Land. His life has had some ups and downs over the years, and they’ve made him a little hard to track down if you were looking to get a Mike Brown tattoo. His portfolio alone consisted of a history lesson in tattooing, with everything from the most beautiful Chola’s, Pin Ups, mean ass biker skulls, and touristy sea turtle tats. Thanks Mike for your inspiration, we'll never forget you.

An official Tattoo Museum

For the first time in the world tattoo history our unique passion is getting what it deserves: an official Tattoo Museum. A home for the art and history of this worldwide skin culture. In the last five years we worked on financing this plan to create a firm base to work from. And we are getting there. Right now we are building and renovating on a fantastic location in Amsterdam.

A Unique Location

We are surrounded by a proud collection of other institutions: the little sister of the famous St. Petersburg Hermitage Museum with 600.000 visitors a year; the world famous Museum of Jewish History; the old Portuguese Synagogue; one of the oldest Hortus Botanical Gardens known to man; the Hollandse Schouwburg, a monument for the Holocaust: from this place the transportation of Dutch jews began; the Resistance Museum, dedicated to those who had the balls to stand up against the nazi suppressors; the Dutch Union Museum - on the struggle of the working class; the Amsterdam Zoo, open since the 17th Century with a zoological centre including a famous library full of unique publications and notes about the discovery of our world and the once working stage of famous 19th century adventurers and the Artis Aquarium; the Museum of Mankind with a theatre, library, etc.

And believe it or not: smacked down in the middle of all this one of Amsterdams biggest adventure: The Amsterdam Tattoo Museum.
